X by Tim Waggoner Review

It’s true. I’m an obsessed A24 fan.

When I saw that horror writer, Tim Waggoner – who also wrote the novelization for Terrifier 2 – was releasing the novelization of Ti West’s X trilogy, I was seated. I immediately purchased X while I waited for the other two to arrive on A24’s site and I read it in one sitting. I don’t always review books (I’m trying to get better at it) but this was one of my favorite reads of last year and I wanted to tell someone about it.

My biggest concern with starting this book was this: will I just be thinking about the movie the whole time? The answer was a resounding yes, but that doesn’t mean it was a bad experience. Tim does a great job with expounding on the character’s feelings and motives during vital scenes in the movie. Like the scene where Maxine is giving herself a pep talk in the mirror and Wayne walks in, we learn who these characters are right from the start: Wayne is driven by money and Maxine is driven by her ambitions. Throughout the novel, there are little nods that can serve as either foreshadowing or easter eggs for those who have seen the movie to giggle over. This is the way I feel novelizations should go – tell me what I know, show me what I don’t know, and make me care more about these characters. Make me feel like the world is real, make me feel like I know these people.

If you liked any of the Ti West trilogy and you like to read, I absolutely recommend you read X. It’s a quick read – especially if you’ve seen the movie already – and it will make you feel immersed in the world of Maxine Minx. I’ve already purchased the next two books and I’ll be breezing through those some time soon so keep a look out for those reviews. Until then, keep reading and stay cool 😎
