It’s blaringly obvious that I’m a cinephlie and horror is my comfort genre. Even just a quick look at my Letterboxd profile will show you that I’ve seen over 2,000 movies and that’s only counting since I’ve been on Letterboxd. So it should come as no surprise that since 2021, I’ve held a tradition in my home called “31 in 31” or 31 Horror Movies in 31 Days.
In 2021, the tradition started with me watching horror movies every single day from August 1st to October 31st. This was pre-Letterboxd, which meant I simply watched the movie and did not write a review on any platforms. I love horror movies but watching a horror movie every day for 92 days? It’s a little much. Over the next years, I reduced it down to 61 days, until finally landing on 31 in 31 in 2023. It’s just enough to not get tired of seeing someone beheaded by a chainsaw.
What are the rules? Well, its simple. Pick a horror movie (including short films) of any kind. This means slashers, body horror, creature features, thrillers with horror elements, and the like. Cannot be a television series. Watch a film every day and if a day is missed, movies will need to be doubled (or even tripled) up on the following day. Simple, right? And I’m aware these are arbitrary rules that can be changed at any point, but I do try to stick to them as much as possible.
Lately, I’ve been trying to revisit films I haven’t seen in years or don’t remember at all (that happens alot), so this year’s 31 in 31 will be a little different. For one, I will only be watching films I have on physical media and have not reviewed on Letterboxd. This means I’m pulling the DVDs and Blu-rays off the shelf. And since this means I can actually see what I have to watch, this is the first year I will be pre-organizing my list of movies in order of date released. Usually, I use a randomizer to tell me what movie to watch. Below is the film schedule.
